Starting a business is a leap of faith in itself, but starting a faith-based creative business adds a whole new dimension to that journey. When I began Faith & Flourish Co., I didn’t have all the answers, but I had a vision and calling on my heart. I wanted to create something that honored God, used my creative gifts, and made a positive impact on others. Along the way, I’ve learned invaluable lessons about entrepreneurship, creativity, and most importantly, trusting in God’s plan.
If you’re thinking of starting your own faith-based business, or if you’re already on that path and seeking inspiration, here are some of the lessons I’ve learned that might encourage you on your journey.
1. Trust God to Guide Your Path
When I first had the idea to start Faith & Flourish Co., I knew it would take more than just passion to succeed—I would need to rely on God every step of the way. I learned the hard way that leaning on myself would only lead to closed doors. We’re not bigger than His plans and we can’t rush them either. Remember our time is not His. The business world can feel overwhelming, with so many decisions to make and paths to take; like me you may find yourself jumping too quickly. Find comfort in surrendering your plans to God and trusting Him to guide you, even when you don’t see the whole picture.
"Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and He will establish your plans." – Proverbs 16:3
In the early stages, I had to let go of the idea of control and embrace faith. There were moments of uncertainty, but God always showed up, opening doors I hadn’t even considered and closing others that weren’t meant for me. Trusting in His timing and guidance has been key to the growth and success of my business.
2. Start Small, But Dream Big
When I first started Faith & Flourish Co., I didn’t have a huge following or a long list of customers; in fact, I had deleted all my social media for about a year, so I was starting from scratch. It can be easy to get discouraged when your business starts small, but small beginnings are often part of God’s plan. What matters is that you are faithful with what you’ve been given, no matter how small it seems.
"Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin." – Zechariah 4:10
God honors those who are faithful in the little things. Over time, as I nurtured my small beginnings, He provided opportunities for growth. It’s important to remember that success doesn’t always happen overnight, and God often uses these early stages to refine and prepare you for what’s ahead.
3. Use Your Gifts to Glorify God
Your creative business is an opportunity to showcase the gifts God has given you. Whether you’re an artist, a writer, a crafter, or something entirely different, your creativity is a reflection of the Creator. When you use your talents to glorify God, it not only brings you joy, but it also points others to Him.
"Whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God." – 1 Corinthians 10:31
For me, that meant combining my love for painting with my passion for faith. Each hand-painted Bible I create is a way for me to worship God and share His Word with others. I’ve learned that when you work from a place of love and reverence for God, your work becomes an offering—one that He can use to reach others.
4. Build a Community
One of the most fulfilling parts of starting Faith & Flourish Co. has been the relationships I’ve built with my customers and fellow Christian entrepreneurs. Your business isn’t just about selling a product; it’s about building a community. (Read that again) By sharing your heart, your mission, and your story, you’ll attract people who resonate with your vision.
"And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds." – Hebrews 10:24
I’ve been blessed to connect with women who share my heart for faith and creativity, and together, we’ve built a community that encourages and uplifts one another. A community that’s not done growing! Whether it’s through social media, or one of my personal favorites, in-person markets, building relationships has been essential in growing my business.
5. Be Prepared for Challenges (and Stay Faithful)
Owning a business comes with its share of challenges—whether it’s financial pressures, creative blocks, or moments of doubt. But in every season, God is faithful. I’ve had to remind myself often that even when things don’t go as planned, God is still in control, and He is working all things for my good.
"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose." – Romans 8:28
There will be hard days when you feel like giving up, but those are the days when you lean even more on God. Stay faithful in prayer, continue to seek His wisdom, and trust that He will provide for your every need. The challenges you face will ultimately strengthen you and refine your business for greater things ahead.
6. Keep Your Mission at the Center
As your business grows, it can be easy to get caught up in numbers, profits, and the pressures of success. But I’ve learned that keeping your mission at the center is key. For Faith & Flourish Co., the mission is always to glorify God, spread His Word, and encourage others in their faith. When you keep Christ at the center, everything else falls into place.
"But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." – Matthew 6:33
As long as you’re aligned with God’s purpose for your business, you can trust that He will take care of the rest. Your mission is what will sustain you through the highs and lows and remind you why you started in the first place.
7. Don’t Be Afraid to Dream Big
Finally, don’t be afraid to dream big. God has plans for your life and your business that are bigger than you can imagine. As you move forward, continue to pray and seek His vision for what He wants to accomplish through you. There’s no limit to what God can do with a willing heart and a faithful spirit.
"Now to Him who is able to immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us." - Ephesians 3:20
Dream big, trust God, and step out in faith. Your creative business can be more than just a source of income; it can be a ministry, a way to serve others, and a testimony of God’s goodness.
Starting a faith-based creative business is a journey of faith, creativity, and trust in God. It may not always be easy, but it’s one of the most rewarding things you can do. Remember, God has equipped you with unique gifts and a purpose for His glory. As you walk this path, lean on Him, dream big, and trust that He will guide you every step of the way.
