Teaching My Kids About God and Nurturing a Godly Life
I’m so excited to share a piece of my heart with you about creating Christ-centered homes. One of my greatest joys as a mother and homeschooler is guiding my children’s journey with God. Teaching them about faith isn’t just something we reserve for Sundays; it’s woven into our daily lives through simple yet meaningful moments. Here’s how I’m helping my kids embrace a God-centered life and why each of these small practices matters so much to me.
Modeling by Example
One of the most powerful ways to teach our kids about God is to lead by example. They’re always watching us, learning from how we live. In the mornings, I set aside time for Bible reading and prayer after my husband, Taylor, leaves for work. I often tell my kids, “This is Mommy’s time with God,” and they know it’s a special, quiet moment for me. It shows them that time with God is essential to starting my day, grounding me in His word and love.
Beyond my morning routine, I try to model Christ-like behavior in all areas of life. How do we react in moments of stress or frustration? Are we kind, patient, and gentle, or do we let anger get the best of us? The Bible says, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control” Galatians 5:22-23. I want my children to see those qualities in me. And when I fall short, I use those moments to show them the importance of seeking forgiveness. I might say, “Mommy was wrong; I shouldn’t have raised my voice. Will you forgive me?” This teaches them that we all make mistakes and that God’s grace is there for us when we do.
Making Conversations About God a Daily Habit
I believe God should be part of our everyday conversations, not just reserved for structured times. Whether we’re admiring nature, dealing with challenges, or talking about gratitude, I try to bring God into the discussion. If we’re outside, I might say, “Look at how beautifully God created these flowers,” or “Aren’t we blessed to see the sky He painted today?” When my kids face struggles, I encourage them to pray or consider what Jesus would do.
These conversations help them see God as a close friend and guide them in every aspect of life. My hope is that they grow up understanding God isn’t distant or only for Sundays but is ever-present, always ready to listen and guide.
Prayer as a Family
Prayer is a consistent part of our family rhythm. We pray before meals, thanking God for His provision, and before bed, reflecting on the day and asking for peace and protection. These prayers are simple, but they lay a foundation of gratitude and dependence on God.
At bedtime, we often take turns praying, and I love hearing their sweet, honest prayers. Sometimes they’re short and simple, other times thoughtful and filled with questions. It’s a precious reminder that God hears every prayer, no matter how small, and that they’re developing a relationship with Him that’s uniquely theirs.
At young age I would offer to pray with them, and now that my oldest is five she knows she can talk to God when she needs. She recently said to me, "mommy I went to my room and prayed to God." All on her own. Watching your kids love the Lord is by far the best gift we could ever receive as moms.
Fun, Engaging Bible Lessons During Homeschool (or after School for mamas who work outside the home)
In our homeschool, I try to make learning about God both engaging and enjoyable. We use children’s Bibles and hands-on lessons, which help make the stories and teachings of the Bible accessible and memorable. Resources from Mustard Little Seeds and Sonshine Book Co. have been a huge part of our biblical curriculum, offering printouts and activities that make complex ideas simple and fun. My kids also love the coloring pages and stories that illustrate God’s love, and it brings me joy to see them excited to learn about Him. Another more recent thing we've added is Heavens Littles on Youtube for toddlers or preschool age learning. She's brand new to Youtube, and someone I found through social media. I am so excited to start incorporating her more. The first video had my kiddos super engaged and excited. I should note that we recently cut tv out of our day. For us it was often conflicting with our daily teaching, taking away their imaginative pay, and too complicated to moderate, which makes these quick YouTube videos extra fun.
I'm not going to say TV is wrong, but I 10/10 recommend cutting it back or doing away with it in the everyday routines. My kids have never been better behaved, played so well together and independently. Taking away screentime has by far been the best thing I have done as a mom in a while. They no longer even ask for it. We removed the tv from their sight so it's not even an option or on their mind. We save screentime for educational purposes or special family movie nights. This may sound random, but I truly believe it's also the best thing I could have done for their growing minds and relationship with Jesus. How we prioritize our time is just one more way we can show that we're living for Christ and not the world at a very young age. Now no shame for those that allow their kiddos to watch tv, I am by no means against it, just sharing what I've come to notice in my own home. That first week I would say things like, "God wants us to use our time more wisely and sitting in front of a screen isn't the best use of our time." As the weeks have gone on, I've noticed their imaginations grow I have said things like, "see what happens when we stopped watching so much tv. See how your imagination is growing or how well you've played with your siblings. Mommy loves to watch you be creative and use the skill's God has given you." Even Lila, lover of movies, has admitted that it has been a blessing for our family to no longer have tv.
Worship Music to Set the Tone
Music is a beautiful way to connect with God, and it fills our home with joy. We play worship music in the background during morning routines and homeschool time, setting a peaceful, uplifting tone for the day. I also mix in worship songs for kids, making it easy for them to sing along. “Let everything that has breath praise the Lord” Psalm 150:6— and there’s nothing more joyful than hearing my little ones’ voices singing praises. This is another window of time I allow screentime. We have recently loved @ListenerKids on YouTube. These videos are engaging and always get my kiddos up dancing a praising Jesus. These videos are great for toddler/preschool age.
Letting Faith Be Part of Everyday Life
Faith isn’t just a subject in our house; it’s the foundation of our everyday life. Whether we’re baking, having family movie nights, or exploring nature, I try to find ways to include God. We talk about how God provides for us, encourages kindness, and is there when we’re afraid or uncertain. These small reminders teach my kids that God is in every part of life, big and small.
Fostering a Love for God’s Word
We have age-appropriate children’s Bibles that make stories come alive for my kids. Currently we are using My Read and Rhyme Bible Storybook. I love this one because it not only Rhymes which is always fun, but also has words for them to learn how to read, as well as engaging questions at the end of each story and an activity you can do with them. There are many great Children's Bibles out there, but this is defiantly our current favorite and keeps my kid's attention. We’ll often have “story time” sessions where I read to them, and they get to ask questions and share their thoughts. I want them to see the Bible not just as a book, but as God’s voice speaking to them. “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path” Psalm 119:105, and I hope it becomes a guiding light for them too.
Encouraging Gratitude and Service
I want my children to grow up with hearts full of gratitude and a desire to serve others. We talk about being thankful for our blessings and finding ways to help others. Whether it’s making preparing meals for someone who is sick, just had a baby, or experienced a loss or praying for or praying for our friends, these small acts remind them that living a Godly life means showing love and kindness to those around us.
Trusting in God’s Plan
Finally, I remind my children often that God has a unique plan for each of them. “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” Jeremiah 29:11. Even though they’re young, I want them to know they are deeply loved, and that God has a purpose for their lives.
Teaching my kids about God and nurturing a God-centered life is a journey, full of little moments that I hope will have a lasting impact. Through example, conversation, prayer, music, and lessons, I’m laying the foundation of faith I pray will guide them their whole lives. I’m so grateful for the resources that make it easier to bring God’s Word into our days, and my hope is that these practices help them grow in their relationship with Him and know His love deeply.
I pray this blog post has brought some new unique ways you can bring Christ into your daily routines with your kiddos as well as encouragement. Know that I do do this all perfectly, and their are days I too fall short. These moments are perfect learning opportunity for them as well as modeling that even mommy needs grace, forgiveness from time to time. Just remember mama, our greatest ministry is within our very own homes. We are raising the next generations of Christians! We are disciple makers and you should be so proud of that title.
